Halloween in the Upper West Side of New York City
Sure, Manhattanites live on an island, not much space, and little opportunity to fill a yard with whacky lawn decorations yet still parents and kids find time to venture out, up, and around to find their fun and candy. There are many option around town for costume watching - Greenwich Village for decedant and devilish adult costumes, the parade up 7th Ave. But I prefer to seek out those for which Halloween was really designed for - kids.
In many buildings, including mine, you sign up for kids to stop by for candy. Julio, Hugo, and others in our co-op decorate the basement and the results are spooky fabulous. They started working on it in early October so I jumped more than once venturing down there with my trash to find the elevator opening onto a dark cooridor illuminating ghosts, skulls, tombstones, and cobwebs with black lights.
Two blocks on West 69th St. are closed off between Central Park West and Amsterdam so the whole block can fill up with strollers, costumed kids, caring parents, and lookie-loos like myself. Many of the buildings and brownstones have stoops and almost all really decorate and participate in the showmanship of the holiday. Here are some of my favorite photos from the evening.

Why does the robot man have blood splattered on him? Did he attack Fred Flintstone and beat him with his own club? A sad day in Bedrock.
You're kidding? A robot, Halloween, and you want logic behind blood splatter? Guess he just slayed a critic of his/her costume in revenge.
