In The Soup

Alexandre Rockwell directs Steve Buscemi and Seymour Cassel in a fun and absurdest little film about a film-maker and the mob-connected friend who backs his art. Unfortunate for Buscemi, but fun for the audience, Cassel's character is loony, dragging the poor young guy into a wild and weird series of chaotic moments and thrills. When focused on this duo, the film shines and sizzles with unpredictability. With Cassel, no one knows what he'll do next. Unfortunately the director throws in his girlfriend, Jennifer Beals, and some excessive scenes - dancing on a roof in the snow - just because they're pretty. Despite these sidetracking moments, the film is still worthy of watching just for Buscemi and Cassel's performances, reminding me once again that Hollywood so often neglects such wonderful talent in favor of good looks and stylish manners. At least we have indies.

After each Young Friends of Film, there is a post-discussion with the cast and crew. Sometimes it is very professional and reflective of process. This was not such a case. This was a free-for-all. Cast was talking over each other, Buscemi was charming, and they even called Cassel on a cell phone so he could join in the jocularity. Men goofing.
