The Brothers Grim

Erica's Book Reading
... I'm such a film geek

My friend Erica Rowell has her first book out. It is on the Coen brothers films and it is fascinating. She organizes each chapter around one of their films and a key symbol that reflect a theme or common element pertinent to the story's soul. For example, Chapter 1 Blood Simple: A photo, Chapter 7 The Big Lebowski: A Bowling Ball, and Chapter 8 is O Brother, Where Art Thou?: A Song. Each is very fun and filled with details a film geek like me loves.

So, to support my friend and tap into Erica's knowledge without reading (sort of like Cliff Notes or renting the video of a book for the class exam), I headed to her book reading at Credit Suisse. Her alumni group from Bates College sponsored the event buried deep beneath the ground-level floors of the fancy11 Madison addressed building . There was quite the food spread, cheeses, meats, spring rolls, all sorts of heavy h'orderves. I mooched, mingled, asked a dorky question on the brothers take on love before booking out to walk home. It was a weeknight and I needed my beauty rest ... by the sags under my eyes, I still need more, perhaps a decades worth. Little did I know that I had actually crashed the event. The next day a friend mentioned she would hae gone except for the event fee. Event fee? I just waltz right in! Now most friends will attest to my cheap love of crashing events and scamming my way into clubs to avoid cover charges. I take a small bit of pride in doing this for events I think merit no cover charge, for example a cash bar event for my high school reunion. But I truly didn't intend to crash Erica's event ... hope the Bates folks don't think her crude and ruffian given my behavior. As for what they think of me ... f*&^ 'em.
