Sushi Sen-Nin

Holy Flying Roe!

Wow. I really don't know why I didn't protest the restaurant selection. My friend who lives near the Empire State Building - the virtual wasteland of interesting culture and food in the city - wanted to go the this high-profile neighborhood sushi place on 33rd near Madison. A few blocks west is the heart of Koreantown. But I really trust my friend's opinions on food. Well, this very beautiful restaurant, decorated with beautiful colored banners, was posh but completely empty when we arrived at 8:30 pm. The rainbow roll was wonderful - seven types of fish with avocado, roe and other yummy things in there - but the wasabi had no kick whatsoever. At $27 I would expect more! Adding the other selections - steamed shrimp dumplings, which were slightly gummy and lacking enough hot mustard, and the tofu tempura appetizer, which was fabulous with a miso-soy based soup topped with scallions, ginger, and bento flakes. So, after great expense, I was left with a so-so opinion and regrets that we didn't saunter over a few blocks for local Korean teen culture and some spicy kimchee.
