As You Like It

Headed out to Brooklyn to check out The Bridge Project's production of As You Like It. I tend to like this Shakespeare play mainly because it's low on gore and the women get to have a central role in driving the plot. Of course there's cross dressing and power struggles, classic Shakespeare. And I haven't seen many versions of this play so my expectations were probably high given that Sam Mendes was directing.

The set is simple and effective. I particularly like the open feel of the stage, the use of lights that come down to set the frame - boxing ring, diner table - and the trees, grasses and raised boardwalk.

The performances were all good but I really never felt any of the deliveries was exceptional. More disappointing was the very tradition and staid direction. While everything was good, nothing was great. Even the thrill of local community theater has more anticipation and tension as you wait the expect flub or set gaff. This whole piece just worked like clockwork. Guess I miss the thrill of the risk but perhaps Mr. Mendes didn't feel comfortable taking those risks ... out in Brooklyn ... when people expect a certain solid delivery.

Perhaps next time, I'll take a risk and go see an NYU production.
