Yum, Mexican food. I still miss Tex-Mex food but I'm happy to find a decent tortilla in this town. Add fluffy rice and perfectly cooked beans and I just might go back again. Haven't found a place like that in NYC yet.

Decided to try Toloache in the theater district before heading to the matinee of Ragtime. We got there when they opened at 11:30 m. They had a nice brunch menu but I decided to go with the tacos - yum - with black beans and rice. I also enjoyed one of their signature cocktails, a sort of wild blueberry and pomegranate thing; tasted good and I enjoyed picking out the blueberries with my straw. Therese has the shrimp tacos whcih looked so-so.

Dad picked the winner. He had a sort of Mexican update on poached eggs and toast. The eggs were topped with a spicy version of hollandaise sauce. Greens and corn gave it a nice veggie balance.

Problems arose as the hour set in. The lofty ceiling and minimal upholstery mean the noise grew by octaves with each additional person added to the mix. By the time we were leaving, it was hard to hear each other's conversation. Also, the lock on the downstairs bathroom didn't lock resulting in not one but three accidental intrusions on those doing their business. If I were to go again, I think I'd stick with early brunch to avoid the noise and crowd. Better yet, I think I'd head to one of their YerbaBuena locations.
