... and a side of ketchup

Off-off-off Broadway can be weird; one show in the East Village had people fishing, painting eyeball on their lids and setting free about 50 flashing Nemo fish toys). More often, however, it is boring. Luckily Julie Fitzpatrick's one-woman show isn't boring but it is, unfortunately, rather unimportant. Julie bounces from one corner of the stage, her apartment, to the other corner, a Friendly's booth in her hometown. She works through her memories of her deaf friend, Elizabeth, even acting her part complete with the strained vocalizing notes. We learn that her friend has died, don't know why. We learn the town wants Julie to do a benefit performance in her honor up in Vermont, or was it New Hampshire? But Julie doesn't know what to perform. I think she's still working on it. We are left with a few bounces back and forth in Julie's New York world, and her hometown memories of Elizabeth including many servings of ketchup. Unfortunately we never really learn about either of them or why they were such good friends. It was still enjoyable watching Julie transition between being herself and being Julie but more substance in the script could have propelled this into something poignant versus and interesting acting exercise.
